The cave exploration in Leye-Fengshan UGGp achieved fruitful results again

From Mar.10th to 20th of 2017, the international expedition team which was composed of cavers who are from China, Italy, France and Hong Kong carried out the 10-day cave exploration activity in Fengshan subarea of Leye-Fengshan UGGp.

The major purposes of this activity included: To explore the underground karst cave system further in Jiangzhou village and Mouai region of Pingle village, to develop the geotour routes in the Geopark; To explore the underground huge cave system around the Fengshan town, to discuss the value of tourism development and scientific research, and the ways of protection, to stimulate the Fengshan tourism development; To explore more world-class geosites and karst landscapes, to add the attraction for the Geoparks tourism.

After the 10-day exploration, 25 caves, 5 subterranean rivers and cave passages with a total length of 21 kilometers were explored, got the amazing achievement:

1. The biggest cave chamber for now in the Geopark were discovered at the bottom of Nongle tiankeng---Hong Kong Haiting Cave Chamber, with a total area of 77 thousand square meters, it is the top 3 of the biggest in China and top 7 in the world. It renewed the record “Marco Polo Cave (68 thousand square meters).

2. The total length of the underground cave system of Jiangzhou was explored to 53 kilometers, 6.7 kilometers were explored for this time. The total length were added from 46.3 kilometers to 53 kilometers. It ranks the No.3 in China for now.

3.  A new entrance was found in Jiangzhou underground cave system. The entrance is a big pitch with a depth of over 300 meters, it is the deepest pitch in the Geopark, and it is also the 15th entrance of the Jiangzhou underground cave system which has been found at present.

4. In the Tianxian cave, a stalagmite with a height of 52 meters was found, it is the second highest stalagmite in the Geopark ( the highest one locates in Yulongdong cave, 62 meters high), the height of the stalagmite has come out in front in the world list. It helps to add the world-class attraction for Fengshan cave expedition.

 

 

All the explorers were amazed by the karst resources of Leye-Frengshan UGG, and they highly praised the beautiful eco-environment as well. In addition, the explorers believed that there were more world-class karst resources waiting for exploring. They would keep eyes on Fengshan, and help to promote Fengshan. (Chen Zhiqiang)
