Summary

The 6th International Training Course on UNESCO Global Geopark Management and Development is held in Yimengshan Global Geopark on Dec. 8th, 2020. More than 120 staff and researchers from Global Geoparks, candidate sites for Global Geoparks, research institutes, universities and other technical support departments participated in this training course.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Zhang Jianping, Vice Chairman of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council, member of the Executive Board of the Global Geopark Network(GGN), and Professor of China University of Geosciences (Beijing). Kristof VANDENBERGHE, Secretary-General of the UNESCO Global Geopark Secretariat. Nikolaos Zouros, Chairman of the Global Geopark network, and Guy Martini, Chairman of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council, delivered speeches by video or online video respectively. Jin Xiaochi, Vice Chairman of the GGN, Coordinator of the Asia-Pacific Geopark network(APGN) and Researcher of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Yuan Xiaohong, Director of Natural Park (Natural Heritage) Management Division, Department of Nature Reserve Management, National Forestry and Grassland Administration, Ma Yan, Vice President of Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Zheng Liansheng, Deputy Mayor of Linyi municipal Government, Ma Junjie, Secretary of the Party Committee of China University of Geosciences (Beijing) and Dean of the Institute of Natural Culture, delivered speeches at the opening ceremony respectively.



Zheng Liansheng pointed out in his speech that Linyi is a historical and cultural city, a well-known old revolutionary area, a capital of commerce, and a city with mountains and rivers. Yimengshan Global Geopark consists of Mengshan Park, Diamond Park, Daigu Park, Menglianggu Park and Yunmeng Lake Park, which covers a area of 1804.76km2. In recent years, Linyi Municipal Party Committee, municipal government learned and carried through the idea that Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets, they also actively promote the protection of Mengshan and the development of global tourism. Yimengshan Global Geopark successfully became the National 5A-class Scenic Spot, and was named as a numbers of Global Geoparks by UNESCO in APR. 2019. It is also the 38th Global Geopark in our country and the 2nd in Shandong province and it became a model of ecological civilization construction in the country even the world. In Nov. 2019, Linyi Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government established Linyi Mengshan Management Committee and YimengShan Global Geopark Administration. With the goal of "world famous geological mountains, national ecological model", they try hard to build ecological civilization practice highlands, rural revitalization Yimeng highlands, red cultural heritage highlands and high-quality tourist destinations, and put them as mid-term goals.Besides, they also make great efforts to implement the ecological civilization construction of Mengshan and promote the high-quality development of Mengshan and Yimengshan Global Geopark.The next step, they will strictly abide by the purpose of the UNESCO Global Geopark, and insist to put the protection as the main action and Persist in resisting large-scale development, and to protect Yimengshan Global Geopark as their own eyes, so that to make the Geopark become the science popularization base of Lingyi’s geologic process , and the model of the Global Geopark protection.

More than 120 staff and researchers from Global Geoparks, candidate sites for Global Geoparks, research institutes, universities and other technical support departments participated in this training program.

This training course was jointly organized by China University of Geosciences (Beijing), Yimengshan Global Geopark Administration and the National Geopark Network Center of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, and technical support provided by the Greek Aegean University. At the same time, it has been strongly supported by the UNESCO Global Geopark Secretariat, GGN, APGN, Natural Reserve Management Department of State Forestry and Grassland Administration and Secretariat of the Chinese National Committee for UNESCO.

The training course focuses on the current status of the UNESCO Global Geopark in the Asia-Pacific region, with the theme of geopark declaration, evaluation and re-evaluation, and Invited directors of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council, members of the Executive Board of the Global Geopark Network, and experts from outstanding global geoparks and other institutions as lecturers. It aims to promote geopark managers to understand the world geoparks in depth and improve management capabilities.

This training course is composed of lectures and group discussions, on-site learning exchanges and case analysis, it also contains expert explanations, problem analysis, student discussions and field work. This class conduct all-round targeted training and seminars on the concepts, standards, declaration, evaluation and re-evaluation of the UNESCO Global Geopark, emphasizing the pertinence and effectiveness of the training. This training class will last until the Dec. 12th,2020.
