A Curved bending of terrane caused by crustal movement is call fold, which is the result of the horizontal compression of the crust.

There are two basic types of fold, namely anticline and syncline. Anticline strata normally dip away from axial center, while syncline strata normally dig toward axial center. In terms of the landform, Anticline strata are normally mountains, while syncline strata are normally valleys or basins.

Folded structure is one of the most common geologic structures in the crust, which covers almost all basic forms of large and medium landforms on the earth. Many high mountain ranges belong to folded mountain ranges, such as the Himalayas, the Alps and the Andes.

Basic components of a fold include the core, wing, axial trace, hinge, axial surface and axis.
