A Joint is the most common tectonic fissure structure in the upper rocks in the crust, which is a fracture in the rocks without obvious displacement.

Joints according to the reasons of their formation, is divided into: ① Original joint, which is formed in the diagenetic process, such as the mud crack caused by shrinkage of sedimentary rocks or columnar joint caused by the cooling and shrinkage of magmatic rocks. ② Tectonic joint, which is the result of tectonic deformation. ③ Non-tectonic joint, which is the result of external motive forces, such as joint caused by weathering, landslide or landslip. It is normally limited to the shallow ground surface.
