Karst Distributions in China and Around The World

Sources:    Time:2013-06-21

Karst areas cover 18 million km2 on the land area, accounting for 15% of its total area. They are distributed in 40 countries around the world and are home to around 1/6 of the world’s population (about 1 billion). In China, karst areas add up to 3.44 million km2, accounting for 1/3 of its land area, among which 910 thousand km2 are bare carbonate rock distribution area.

The karst in China are formed in all kinds of karst types due to the following factors – old and hard carbonate rocks, monsoonal climate with adequate waters and heats, uplift of the Cenozoic crust, and rocks without exaration of Last Glaciation.  It is worth mention that the karst area in south China is as wide as 500 thousand km2, which is the biggest contiguous distribution area of bare carbonate rock, featuring peak forest (hoodoo) plains, peak-cluster depressions, Shilin (Stone Forest), karst valleys and huge underground caves, as if a very rare natural museum of karst formations.
